The Silesian Theater in Katowice

The Silesian Theater is the largest drama theater in Upper Silesia. The building was erected in 1907.

Performed on the Major Stage are outstanding works of  classical, Polish and world drama.  Established in 1981, the Chamber Stage presents most frequently the contemporary Polish and international plays. The third venue is the Painting Room Stage, opened in November, 1992. The artistic offer of the Silesian Theater includes also the literary encounters as well as presentation of fine arts and music.  Two galleries show works related to theater, by such authors as:  Jerzy Duda-Gracz, Maciej Bieniasz, Zygmunt Brachmański, Henryk Waniek, Adam Myjak, Roman Kalarus, Tadeusz Siara, Günter Grass, Stanisław Mazuś, Roman Maciuszkiewicz  and many more.

A remarkable moment in the history of the Theater was the feast of poetry in Katowice in June, 1993 during which the title of doctor honoris causa of the Silesian University was awarded to Josif Brodski. Among  participants of the celebrations were Czesław Miłosz, Tomas Venclova and  Stanisław Barańczak.  The event was followed by “Günter Grass Days" (1996 r.) when the Theatre received a number of eminent translators of Polish and German literature.  Active in its  international relations the Theater performed in many European cities, including Moscow and Ufa in Russia, Lvov, Vilnius, Brussels, Stockholm, Vienna and Paris.
