The historical GUIDO Coal Mine in Zabrze

The historical GUIDO Coal Mine [Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego] in Zabrze dates back to the mid-19th century. It owes its name to Prince Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck, its founder and original owner.

The Mine lost its original meaning when its coal deposits were exhausted. In 2007, the Mine began to operate again, as a tourist facility. GUIDO has two routes for visitors: level 170 and 320 (meters under ground level). Level 170 is an exhibition related to the mining tradition and culture and a geological exhibition. Level 320 allows one to track the development of mining technology, and provides an emotive insight into the industry: one of the headings is 1m high, the other one is inclined at 18 degrees.

The Mine also runs cultural activities. Music up to Scratch [Muzyka na Poziomie] is a cycle of concerts, Theatre up to Scratch [Teatr na Poziomie] is the most deeply located stage in Poland. The GUIDO is on the Industrial Monuments Route [Szlak Zabytków Techniki] of the Silesian Province.

Visitors must reserve tickets. Level 320 is closed for children below 7 years of age.
