The Mariacka Street in Katowice

Ulica Mariacka is a pedestrian walk located in the very centre of Katowice. Its name is derived from the St. Mary Church  located at the end of this street.

Mariacka that has been recently thoroughly rebuilt has been functioning as a venue for numerous interesting cultural events (many concerts, exhibitions and other events) in town. It is hard to believe that not so long ago, there was regular traffic there and it was a very infamous place.

Ulica Mariacka was built in the second half of the 19th century and it has an abundant history. It was the location of the Savoy Hotel so famous just before and after World War 1. It was here where an old German movie star, Willy Fritsch, was born.

Mariacka is the location of clubs: KatoBar, Lorneta and Meduzą, Katofonia. It is a place where numerous concerts are held e.g. the Lajer cycle of the Śląskie Straszki [Silesian Scares}
