Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice
Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice is the oldest graduate school active throughout the Upper Silesia. Beginnings of the school date back to 1929 when the National Musical Conservatory was established by Witold Friemann.
The Academy of Music offers graduate studies in two Faculties: Composition, Interpretation, Education and Jazz as well as Vocal-Instrumental Department. Structures of the school incorporate also the inter-faculty bodies , like the Museum of Silesian Organs or the Computer Music Studio. Graduates of the school are composers, performers and future teachers.
In December, 2007 a state-of-the-art Centre for Science and Musical Education was opened to accommodate, among other facilities, a multifunctional concert hall featuring flexible spatial arrangements and acoustic schemes. Students and graduates of the Academy are awarded numerous prizes during international and countrywide musical contests. Among the graduates are such artists as Krystyna Prońko, Lora Szafran, Majka Jeżowska, Jarosław Śmietana, Marcin Pospieszalski, Ewa Uryga and Kuba Badach.
