Silesian Library in Katowice

Silesian Library is the largest facility of that type throughout the region.

Apart from contemporary publications (literature, periodicals, scientific books), the Silesian Library accommodates an exceptionally valuable set of special collections. Those include old prints, manuscripts and maps.  The collection comprises also the printed publications, audio-visual ones, documents of the social life, CDs, DVDs as well as other electronic media. Established in 2006, the Silesian Digital Library  (www.sbc.org.pl) presents the cultural heritage of Silesia throughout the web. In 2009 the collection was supplemented by about 27 000 scans of historical publications, most valuable for the country. The library is also an animator and publisher with about 30 titles issued each year. The Silesian Library is the seat of “Gulliver” editors –  a periodical on books dedicated to children.

Collections of the Silesian Library include now more than 2 million volumes with a number of readers reaching 220 thousand.  The Library awards the Silesian Literary Laurel – a prize for the book of the year; among the winners were Tadeusz Różewicz, Ewa Lipska, Maciej Maleńczuk and  Janusz Głowacki.
